Wondering why being member of the forums is mandatory to join any of our Guilds/Charters.

Not much happens here. Pretty much everything happens in Discord. There are things that happen in Discord in an official capacity that never get posted here. So, wondering why the forums are required.

Hey Ish - Thanks for the feedback.

Wondering why being member of the forums is mandatory to join any of our Guilds/Charters.

  • Great question. We require all potential members to register with our community (Forums/Website) because it acts as our security for our Discord server. Our bot on Discord links to our forums, allowing us to track members - this is also why when new members register with our bot, it forces their nickname to match their forum name, which then can be used as an in-game note for each chapter/guild/game that has an option for notes on its members. Our officers also use it to track incidents with members and the outcomes of those incidents. While it is still possible for a member to change their overall Discord username (which will force change all server nicknames), we correct these when we find them.

  • The majority of the action does happen in Discord. But in Discord, it is easy to miss information - whether by not being familiar enough with Discord to check your @ mentions Inbox, something not getting pinned (or not knowing how to check pins), not knowing how to navigate, important info getting pushed up by any Discord activity, etc… Any documentation that our teams use can be found on the forums (ie: FAQs, Raiding Information, How-to’s, etc). While we could probably do the same thing with a jillion word documents to keep track of all the information, discussions, meeting notes, etc that do get posted on the forums, that’s not especially efficient and potentially an organizational nightmare. And the 2000 character limit per post on Discord does make in-depth posts difficult.
  • The forums are what we as a community make of them. Currently, the majority of discussion and interaction for our members does take place on Discord. But our forums are a tool we use and will continue to use to both keep our community safe and to use as the tool they are to document information and have long-form discussions.

Feel free to continue the discussion if you have more questions, but this is our reasoning behind our current set-up.

Thanks,
Isi

Edit: Had some further thoughts lol

This is very true and probably something we should get better about it where appropriate. While we try to encourage the use of our forums, but there are some things that only make it on Discord (for instance we have an M+ night on WoW-A that I don’t think we’ve said anything about in the WoW-A category of the forums - and I’m sure there are other examples, that’s just one off the top of my head). It’s definitely an oversight and something to work on.
